Dear Jimmy,
Your inspiration for me to become involved with NANOE and the Governors group compelled me to dig deeper into NANOE ‘s ideas for changing the world of nonprofits. At every turn I have been even more uplifted by the thought that there really can be a way to make this change by going against the norm, pursuing new ideas and creating systems to replace the well-worn methods of the last century.
In my thirty-plus years of business cultivation and alignment with various charities and nonprofits, I have seen time and time again the dysfunction you have spoken about publicly and in your publications. It is indeed refreshing to see your vision as a guiding light away from the roadblocks and resulting frustrations that resurface in seemingly every organization, no matter what their mission may be.
As member of numerous boards and director of nonprofits through the decades, along with my many years in business creating visual media to support their efforts, I have seen multiple sides of the situation and often wondered if I was the only one who thought: Why, in focusing their campaigns, is their not more emphasis placed on serving the donor as customer, as they are ultimately who they really serve! In addition, placing tedious governance and time-consuming fundraising functions on board members, rather than seeking to gain from their true interests and talents, has made many board meetings truly painful. When you look around the room and see a group of people who obviously are wishing they were somewhere else, it is clear that a new board makeup, structure, and direction are all long overdue!
After participating in the edit of “New Guidelines for Non-Profits,” attending the NANOE meetings, and reading your book “RE-IMAGINING PHILANTROPY,” I am even more convinced that you have captured lightning in a bottle with this new way of thinking. Each time I study more of the NANOE material I am further convinced that a massive shift in the way nonprofits do business through establishing relationships in the modern world is the key to the future existence, let alone success, of nonprofit entities. You mentioned to me at our last meeting that you were considering a Major Gifts Ramp-Up conference in the Research Triangle area in the future. I’d be delighted to assist at the time you may want local involvement. If I can contribute to making this wholesale and needed change to nonprofits come into being, I will do what I can to help you!
With best regards,
Rob Shoaf, Managing Director
